It’s the best of both worlds, electric and hybrid. We’re taking another Tech Report test drive, this time with the Ford Fusion Energi.

The Fusion Energi works both as a gas powered car and a plug-in hybrid, meaning you the get equivalent of more than 100 miles to the gallon.

Sporting a newly designed hood inspired by the Aston Martin, the Fusion Energi is definitely a car that’ll get you noticed–both in aggressive styling and in energy efficiency.

“What’s unique about the Fusion Energi is it can work like an electric vehicle,” said Mazen Hammoud, Chief Engineer of Electrified Power Trained Systems at Ford. “If you live ten miles from work, you can go back and forth using all electric energy without ever having to gas up the car.”

Though it’s easy to compare the Fusion Energi to all electric cars, Ford says the Energi is actually in a different class of cars.

“Well what’s different between a Volt and an all new Fusion Energi is that this car is actually a plug in hybrid,” said Samantha Hoyt from Ford. “So once you’ve depleted your battery and gone your 21 miles in Electric Vehicle (EV) mode it turns into a hybrid. You just get phenomenal fuel economy no matter what mode you are driving in.”

In comparison, once the battery drains on the Chevy Volt, it runs on just a regular gas engine.

“We are giving the customer a no compromise solution,” Hammoud adds. “The fuel economy, the electric drive, and a fun to drive car.”

Inside the cabin, tech options include the MyFord Touch powered by Sync for multimedia, dual LCD SmartGauge Cluster EcoGuide that provides real-time hybrid information, and the ability to connect with the MyFord Mobile app.

The Fusion Energi is fun to drive and provides a good balance of muscle and control.

But what makes this car really special is that it gives you the opportunity to reduce your carbon footprint like no other car in its class.

The Fusion Energi starts at about $40,000.

From robots that can teach your kid to say no to junk food and another that promotes exercise engineering students are building bots that can make life easier.

Recently at USC’s Center for Robotics and Embedded Systems we caught up with engineers celebrated National Robotics Week by showcasing some of most innovative robots at work.

“This is Chili the Dragonbot and we’re using chili to help kids made healthy food choices,” said Katelyn Swift-Spong, a student attached to the project. “So the idea is that Chili is training for the big dragon race and the kids are actually picking out foods for chili to eat while it’s training.”

When Chili is offered junk food, it’s programmed to tell you why it might not be a good idea.

It’s not yet a part of everyday lives, but chances are they will be in the future.

Other robots were designed to assist in child motor and psychological development..

“[H]uman user interaction robots… are good for like teaching kids how to interact with different robots,” said a student attached to the project. “[T]hey’ll react to different human emotions and human touches, so they are good with kids and they are an easy way to teach robotics.”

In the future, engineers also see robots having a big impact on our aging population.

A robot called Bandit was designed to help the elderly keep up with their daily physical exercise said Juan Fasola, an engineering student.

Outside of homes, robots like the Eco Mapper will help marine biologists study the sea.

“[The] autonomous underwater vehicle… [is] program[ed] in such that we can give it a mission and it can do it totally on its own,” said Stephanie Kemna an engineering student.

While today’s robots mostly live in labs, scientists and engineers are working to integrate them into education and society.

Warmer weather means more of us are headed outdoors. From camping to hiking, in the U.S. alone more than 280 million people make the trek out to the wilderness each year.

And for most of us, it’s a great time with friends and family. But if you do find yourself lost, being prepared can mean the difference between staying lost and finding your way back home.

“In an emergency situation in the wilderness… the first thing you should do is calm down and focus your mind,” said survival expert Thomas Coyne. “Don’t act on fear or panic. [G]et to a high point to get your bearings. You may not be as lost as you think, and there could be a road, cabin or outpost nearby.”

After you’ve gather yourself, the next step is to protect your body from the elements.

“The number one killer in wilderness survival is exposure,” said Coyne. “Thats why if you are going to be hitting the hills you should have some gear on you that takes care of those things.”

To keep warm, Coyne recommends a simple fire kit instead of traditional lighters and matches. Fire steel, for example, are simple tools that create a spark using two metals. They are waterproof and can stand up to the elements.

“[C]ombined with the proper fuel source, this can make all weather fire making quick and easy,” said Coyne.

Another useful tool to have onhand are survival bracelets–a long cordage that comes easy to carry as a wrist strap.

“[R]ig your shelter together, improvise a signal, to make a trap and catch game,” said Coyne.

Though not very common on short hikes, having some kind of emergency signal like a GPS beacon is highly recommended as a backup to your smartphone.

GPS beacons often work where phone signals can fail and they automatically send a distress signal when turned on.

Finally, remember to keep hydrated.

“It takes weeks to starve, but you can die from dehydration and heat stroke in a matter of hours,” Coyne said.

If you find a water stream, a simple water filter can be a lifesaver. Attach one end to a standard sized water bottle with the filter end in a stream of water. It not only takes out harmful bacteria but can remove bad odor and taste.

No matter the tool though, in the end, the most important thing to have is the motivation to survive said Coyne. “If you focus your mind, you have a few simple tools and address your exposure needs, you can make it for days to weeks even until potential rescue.”

It’s the tongue in cheek brand that’s creating a lot of buzz in big business.

Virgin Group continues to expand worldwide, most recently with additions to Virgin America. The U.S. based airline made its inaugural flight from Los Angeles to San Jose on Wednesday and alongside highlighted recently added inflight features including one that lets passengers send drinks to other patrons onboard.

“[W]e like to push the boundaries a bit,” sad Virgin America CEO, David Cush. “But we think travel should be exciting and should be fun.”

Leading the charge for the chaste bunch was Virgin Group founder Sir Richard Branson. We got to sit with the serial entrepreneur to chat about the group’s ventures and even his favorite gadget.

Rich DeMuro: When your airline expands to a new city like this, how does that make you feel?

Richard Branson: Proud. Proud of the wonderful, wonderful people who work at Virgin America… every detail is right.

DeMuro: How can you get on these planes and not feel good? I mean even the lighting makes you look good.

Branson: …we can have an entertainment system that works. We can have Wi-Fi on every single plane. All these things add up to make for an exceptional service rather than a pretty average service.

DeMuro: That’s an interesting thought because we’ve seen this airline, it’s been around for a little bit now, and when you talk about this airline, there are so many features that people want, that people love when they get on here. But yet, we haven’t seen other airlines follow suit. Why do you think that is?

Branson: I think… the problem that America has is three airlines that completely dominate the skies, and they can just use their shared minds to get their way. But they don’t have to worry about quality; they don’t have to worry about price. So, what we’re trying to do is come in and be a lot smaller than them and not have the same clout as them, but attracts people to Virgin because of the extra bits and pieces we offer and the wonderful staff we’ve got.

DeMuro: You recently broke the sound barrier with Virgin Galactic. Are you excited about space?

Branson: …we’ve spent eight and a half years trying to perfect a spaceship, a mother ship and a rocket ship to take people to space. We’ve finally cracked it and later this year I’ll be going to space. And hopefully from there on, hopefully one day you’ll go to space, your children will go to space and why not? So from everyone I’ve talked to who’s been to space it’s an extraordinary experience.

DeMuro: Is there anything you use on a daily basis that you really enjoy; I mean everyone says their iPhone, but is there anything you rely on?

Branson: …the thing I have wherever I go is my notebook. I just love to capture everything, and I find it easier still to hand write it.

DeMuro: What would you like to disrupt next?

Branson: …so clean energy is something we’d love to disrupt, to have all Virgin planes throughout the world be the cleanest planes in the world.

Choosing a password is one of the biggest decisions we make online. Yet many times, we don’t take it seriously enough.

Hackers work around the clock, figuring out ways to access accounts either for fun or to cause damage.

LivingSocial, Twitter, and Evernote are just a few of the recent and notable hacking victims.

Despite recent hackings, security expert Steve Gibson says there are ways to make our current password systems more secure. But before you make a secure password, you have to first identity a bad one.

“Probably the worst kind of password is something easy to guess,” said Gibson. “1,2,3,4,5, a, b, c, d, e, is a common word. Those are all not good because bad guys try those first.”

While it’s tempting to use the same password everywhere, if one of your accounts is compromised, hackers could gain access to other accounts.

“So a good password is one that is someone who is trying to get into your account has no way of guessing,” said Gibson. “If it’s random characters and letters, that’s the best thing you could use.”

Look into turning on 2-Step Verification. It sends a text to your cell phone when a new device tries to access your account.

Also, a password manager like LastPass can streamline the process. It generates complicated passwords and stores them, so you’re clicking “Forgot my password” less often.

Mother’s Day is the perfect time to appreciate all the things that mom does for us. Show her you care with some techie gifts to make her life easier.

Cherish your memories together using the Ion iPics 2 Go. The gadget uses your iPhone’s camera to convert print photos and negatives into digital files.

When your done, put those pictures to use with a personalized case from Cellairis.

For the non-artistic types, pick more cool case designs from the P.S.- I made this collection.

To help mom tame her busy schedule, check out the Intuition+ app. It creates project lists and calendar reminders- it even gives advice from popular mom bloggers. The app syncs with your iCal and Google calendar, so there’s less fuss and more time with the family.

At the end of the day, Mom can relax using Club W. For $40 a month, she can get three new bottles of wine- personally picked for her taste.

–

Other app mentioned:

Samsung has made a name for itself as one of the most popular Android phone makers. And with the new Galaxy S4 truly does it all.

It has a great battery, camera and design, and even rivals the iPhone.

The Galaxy S4 packs a bigger screen–5 inches–into a design that still feels great in your hand.

“One of the neatest things about this phone is a lot of the advanced, user interface stuff we did,” said Samsung’s Mobile Director of Product Marketing, Ryan Bidan.

The company markets the S4 as a “life companion,” but that pretty much describes any smartphone these days.

The difference here, is in the software.

Samsung’s Sense UI has some neat features and tricks, but a lot of them seem more gimmicky than useful.

Air gestures let you interact without touching the screen. Might be useful while cooking, but in other than that, real-world uses seem limited.

The 13 megapixel camera really shines with pictures rivaling those taken on the iPhone 5. Plus there are 13 unique modes add to experience–The dual camera function is pretty fun. It put you in the picture using a combination of the front and back cameras.

My favorite was the “best shot” feature, which takes a bunch of pictures at once, for you to choose the best frame(s).

The optional case is pretty unique also–a small cutout lets you see who’s calling or check your notifications without opening the phone cover.

In what seems to be a new smartphone trend the S4 also adds an IR blaster so you can control your home entertainment system.

But if all this seems too complicated, perhaps the most useful feature is “easy mode” It makes menus simpler and icons larger, reminiscent of the earlier generations of mobile phones.

“You’ve got a phone [with] lots of great features, huge technology and with something like “easy mode,” great for a wide range of people,” said Bidan.

As for my take, the Samsung’s S4 is the only Android phone I wouldn’t mind recommending to others–even current iPhone users.

Imagine a hospital where doctors can share a patient’s up-to-date medical history as it happens–dramatically reducing clerical errors and making procedures easier for surgeons. That’s the reality one hospital is striving for with its new systems.

Cutting edge technology and standardized integration have made the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) one of the most advanced facilities in the nation.

As part of the hospital’s latest expansion project, new care facilities, machinery and communication processes were implemented to ensure patient safety.

“Connectivity helps us save time, make decisions better and make them faster. And all of that is good for the child undergoing surgery,” said pediatric general surgeon David Gibbs.

Among the new features includes a fully integrated system allowing doctors to bring together images, demographic information, patient history and workflows on a “wall of knowledge.”

“The whole idea is to provide as much information as possible at the right time in the right way so when we make a decision and move a patient through surgery, we can do so with a minimum of disruption to flow or of disruption to safety,” Gibbs said.

CHOC is the third hospital in the nation to implement a system called Studio 3 which digitally records and stores video of surgery for documentation.

The hospital not only improved communication processes between doctors and medical staff, but also between doctors and patients.

“We know that almost all adverse events, medical errors that occur in our industry are due in some way, shape or form to communication,” said Jim Cappon, Medical Director of Quality and Medical Safety.

Doctors at CHOC can take information and images such as those displayed on the “wall of knowledge” and bring them out to families via tablets.

“Ten years ago, a surgeon would bring a polaroid out from the operating room and show it to the family. Now we can do it with tablets,” Cappon said. “They can see it in a way that they can absolutely appreciate and understand.”

With new communication, technological and integration practices, CHOC strives to be the safest children’s hospital in the nation.

Every month Rich DeMuro is on the lookout for gadgets that are unique, affordable and useful.

This month he found: an easy way to expand your WiFi signal; a hotspot with a battery life that lasts and lasts; bluetooth kit that turns any headphones or speakers wireless; and an effective way to revive your wet phone.

Amped Wireless Powerline Network Adapter – $99.99

There always seems to be one spot in the house where the signal just doesn’t reach.

The Amped Wireless Powerline Network Adapter turns an electrical outlet into an Internet connection.

Just plug the other end into your router and you’re good to go.

AT&T Unite – 99 cents or $150

Make anywhere a WiFi hotspot with AT&T Unite.

It has a built-in touchscreen that’s really useful and easy to use. It shows all kinds of great information, like your WiFi network name, password, and how much data you’ve used.

Battery life is awesome and we’ve used it to connect to AT&T’s fast LTE network in several cities

BlueAnt Ribbon - $70

Upgrade any car with an aux input or your favorite pair of headphones with the power of bluetooth.

Blueant Ribbon does just that for 70 dollars. It’s a simple setup and it works like you’d think.

Kensington’s EVAP Rescue Pouch – $20

Save your smartphone from water damage for 20 bucks. Kensington’s EVAP Rescue Pouch is 700 times more effective at absorbing moisture than rice.

It worked as advertised in our test.

We dropped this phone in the water, pulled it out and put it in the pack. 24 hours later it still turned on and functioned like it should.

It might not save every phone, but for 20 bucks, it could be worth a try.

By: Rich DeMuro 4/19/2013 HTC’s new flagship Android phone–called the One–launches today, and it packs some neat new tricks. The $200 device features a great camera, crystal clear display full HD display, and even an IR blaster to use as a TV remote.
HTC’s new flagship Android phone–called the One–launches today, and it packs some neat new tricks.

The $200 device features a great camera, crystal clear display full HD display, and even an IR blaster to use as a TV remote.

I went hands on with the device and here are some thoughts:

Design:

Beautiful design – The One is an eye-catching handset made from a single piece of metal.

The battery isn’t replaceable and the you can’t add more memory.

Sound:

Dual speakers sound great compared to other smartphone speakers.

User Interface:

Blinkfeed on the updated version of HTC’s sense UI is good for people who want a constant news feed. A bit too hectic on the screen for me.

If you don’t like Blinkfeed as the homescreen, you can always adjust it.

Camera:

The Camera on the One is excellent. It’s only 4 megapixels but it captures more light so pictures look great, even in dark settings.

A feature called ZOE captures a few frames before and after you hit the shutter so you can pick the best shot, which is handy if you have kids. The included software also lets you erase photobombers.

TV Remote:

With the power button doubling as an IR blaster, the HTC One can be used as a universal controller. Especially useful today because many of us have our smartphones near us when watching TV.

Final Verdict:

The HTC One is great if you want an Android phone with a good camera. The biggest issue with the phone was that it felt heavy relative to its size and was slippery in the hand.
