Once synonymous with cheap, durable work wear, a stylish pair of jeans today can put you out hundreds of dollars.
But, a company called 20Jeans says staying current on designers fit jeans doesn’t have to come at designer costs.
“Young guys want to look cool but don’t have a ton of dough to spend on designer labels,” said 20Jeans CEO Cory Epstein, who came up with the idea after seeing a trend in women’s clothing. “I was always envious of women who can go to Forever 21 or other store and spend $10, $20, $30 on a dress and that’s their whole outfit.”
At the heart of the 20Jeans business model is to minimize costs by getting rid of unnecessary spending–i.e. high end advertising and physical shops–and relay the saving to the customers.
“We don’t have to pay for expensive showrooms. We don’t have to pay for any of those things that are typically trapped in the traditional retail model,” said 20Jeans COO Ryan Jaleh. “[Guys] can get a pair of whatever color, cut, fit shirts jeans, whatever they want at a price that makes sense for them.”
Alongside jeans, the website offers other items like men’s shirts, jackets, and even hoodies at about $20 to $60.
“I’m a self-employed drummer so the majority of my income goes to just surviving and keeping my gear up,” said 20Jeans loyal customer, Jon Jester. “I found 20Jeans and all of a sudden I’m buying five, six articles of clothing for not even the price of one higher up pair of jeans.”
There are plenty of online only business as of late, some more successful than others, but 20Jeans seems to have found a niche that clicks with young male shoppers today.
For now the company is catering only to men, but if things go well they might expand to women’s and children’s clothes.
